Method Principle
This Diagnostic Automation/ Cortez Diagnostics Inc. Food Vitamin B12 ELISA Kit is a quantitative test based on the principle of the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. An antibody directed against vitamin B12 is bound on the surface of a microtiter plate. Vitamin B12 containing samples or standards and a vitamin B12-peroxidase conjugate are given into the wells of the microplate. Background Information
Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin is important for metabolism, blood cells formation, and with the key role in the maintenances and normal function of the brain and nervous system. Vitamin B12 which is absorbed in the lower part of the small intestine needs an intrinsic factor present in the gastric juice for its absorption. Vitamin B12 deficiency is most commonly caused by low intake, malabsorption due to certain intestinal disorder or low concentration of intrinsic factor, and use of certain medication. A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to sever and irreversible damage, especially in the brain and nervous system. A slightly lower level than normal can cause a of range symptoms such as depression, fatigue, impaired memory, mania, and psychosis. Another issue generated by Vitamin B12 deficiency is Pernicious anemia. This is not generated by an insufficient supply of vitamin B12, but by the absence of intrinsic factor. A pernicious anemia can be treated by a high dosage of vitamin B12 injection. Vitamin B12 is rare in plant sources, thus vegetarians, infants born to vegetarian mothers, and elderly with limited intake of meat or animal products are at high risk for this deficiency.
